4 Common Distractions That Should Be Avoided When Behind The Wheel

We have all been guilty of becoming distracted by something while driving. As much as we would like to admit that we are perfect drivers, we are not. We are human and we unfortunately make mistakes. It is easy to become distracted with all of the pressures that every day in modern society brings. However, when you are behind the wheel, it is important to let everything else take a back seat and concentrate on the task at hand.

Common Distractions And Ways To Avoid Them While Driving

1. Eating

There are way to many moving appendages to attempt to eat while driving. Your vision will be impaired due to your eyes diverting towards your food. Diverting your eyes anywhere other than the road, your instrument panel, and your surroundings is a recipe for disaster. This is one task that should not be attempted to multi-task with. Driving requires your complete and undivided attention. Eating puts your mind on too many things at once and your hands as well, not to mention the drink between your legs. There are entirely too many variables to account for, so the simplest way to avoid this distraction is to take a moment to eat either before or after driving, but never during.

2. Electronic Devices

How did we ever get along before our smartphones, watches, tablets and laptops? This one is easy to avoid. For one, it is against the law to text while driving. In many communities it is even against the law to make calls while driving. The technology available to us in our vehicles almost seems overkill at times. It is always tempting us, around every corner. However, it is of the utmost importance to avoid using your electronics while operating your vehicle. The only two exceptions should be using your GPS or passengers using devices, and even then, instructions should only be typed in, by you, while your vehicle is parked. To put it simply, your call, text or email can wait the extra 5 minutes for you to get to a safe destination.

3. Children

You do not want to avoid your children, however, as a parent that is driving them around, it can be beneficial to keep them distracted by other means. Bickering, fighting, and even pushing and shoving are common occurrences when there are children in the car. As parents, we attempt to keep order but at times things can get a little bit out of hand. Instead of being a loving support system, at times, our children can be a big distraction while you are driving. If your vehicle is not already equipped with a DVD player in the back seat, it might be worthwhile to invest in one. Also, be sure to pick up enough headphones for all of the passengers in the back of your vehicle. They will become preoccupied with the movie and you will be able to focus your concentration on your driving.

4. Pets

Having your lap-dog, or tiny-purse dog with you may be important, but they can also serve as a major distraction to your driving. Your pet could become sick, anxious, or rambunctious. This type of behavior could result in your attention being diverted to tending to your pet. If your pet must travel with you, they should be crated, or other means should be used to ensure that they are secured in the car as well. This will help to protect you and your pet, as well as other drivers on the road.
