Stay Safe On Your Motorcycle This Summer

Florida is one of the lucky states in the country where owning a motorcycle means you can actually drive it all year round, but different seasons mean changes in the traffic. As we come into summer, it’s not just your fellow locals that you’ll have to worry about on the road, there will be a lot of tourists that make the yearly summer pilgrimage with their families to enjoy the many attractions that Florida has to offer.

This means that you’ll need to be a bit more mindful on the road, and remember that as a motorcyclist, when you get into a confrontation with an automobile at speed, you’re the one most likely to lose the battle. That’s why we thought it would be good to remind the motorcyclists out there to follow these guidelines for better safety on the road.

Ride In The Right Frame Of Mind

This applies as much to driving as it does to riding a motorcycle, but it’s important to remember that you’re on a vehicle and putting lives at risk when you make a mistake. If you’re sleepy, you shouldn’t thinking about riding, and even if you’re angry, that can come out in the choices you make on the road such as overtaking and accelerating.

When in doubt, or if others are making comments that now may not be the best time to hit the road, follow that advice. Don’t make a mistake that everyone will regret.

Make Sure Passengers Are Prepared

While a motorcycle can accommodate two riders if required, this also means putting another person in a potentially risky position. As much as the other rider may want to experience the wind flowing through his or her hair, don’t skimp on making helmets available and mandatory when you’re taking to the road.

It’s not illegal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet in Florida under the right conditions, but the safety and protection provided by helmets can’t be questioned. If you don’t want to be responsible for someone else’s potential brain injury, helmet safety is a must.

Don’t Ride Recklessly

While a motorcycle is faster and much more agile than a car, it is absolutely not recommended to demonstrate these qualities to other motorists on the road. In addition to the poor form of showing off, you are placing yourself and others on the road in danger if you attempt to pass between cars at high speeds, take chances with overtaking other vehicles and other actions that may startle or catch drivers off guard.

Flashy moves on a motorcycle may look cool, but they don’t actually endear you to other drivers on the road, especially if they have to compensate for your unpredictable movements with their down defensive driving techniques. Don’t be the rider that reaffirms to motorists that motorcyclists are a menace on the road. Be the rider that proves they aren’t.

Get Help When You Need It

If all else fails and you are unfortunate enough to find yourself the victim of an accident and someone else is responsible, get the appropriate legal help. An experienced motorcycle attorney knows all the right questions to ask and all the right procedures to put into action to get you the compensation you deserve.
